A gunman behind the killing of at least 50 people in an Orlando, Florida, nightclub early Sunday has reportedly been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, a U.S. citizen of Afghan descent.
An FBI official said the shooting, believed to be the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States, is being investigated as an "act of terrorism."
FBI spokesman Ron Hopper said it is premature to definitely classify the shootings as terrorism or a hate crime. That determination will come "once [investigators] have all the facts in place."
Senator Bill Nelson of Florida said intelligence officials informed him the shooter may have pledged allegiance to Islamic State. He added investigators are particularly focused on Fort Pierce and St. Lucie, Florida, where the shooter reportedly lived.
